Increased resistance

My direto is three years old. I understand general maintenance is not needed. Over the last two months it has started increasing the resistance spontaneously when it is warmed up getting harder and harder to pedal. When it does this and I freewheel it does not make the normal clicking noise. It stop it I change to a very low gear and freewheel a bit then it suddenly reduces resistance. I then pedal with low resistance alternating with freewheeling and the clicking starts again. Once it does this I can change up the gears again as normal. This is very disruptive to riding so what can I do about it?
