Rampa configuration with Garmin

Postby thg » Mon Oct 30, 2017 11:25 pm

I'm pairing my Elite Rampa with a Garmin Edge 520 and so far all seems to work quite well. However I don't understand how a few things work and am not sure whether the setup is configured correctly.

1. First off, selecting the Rampa on my Garmin device I can specify a gear ratio. The default is set to 2,78. I don't know why this setting is needed and what it is good for. Am I supposed to cycle with just one gear only?
2. Secondly, I have an additional speed and cadence sensor on my bike which I believe would deliver more accurate values than the ones from Rampa. I actually don't know which values are used by my Garmin, because both sensors are connected. However I wonder how accurate are the speed and cadence values of my Rampa? How is it even possible to know the cadence as the Rampa cannot know which gear I'm currently using?

Thanks in advance!

Hi

I don't know what is the gear ratio option for. I suggest you to read the Garmin user manual or to contact the Garmin customer care.

About speed and cadence on Rampa, I can give you some more information.

First, about speed. Speed is calculated from the number of turns of the elastogel roller. As you can easily understand, the roller is a good parameter for the calculation of speed, as it is not deformable (as it would be a wheel for example). So, speed is definitively precise.

Cadence, instead, is calculated from the microvariations of speed that happens when you do a pedal stroke (sensorless cadence). As it is not a real lecture of a sensor, this only gives an aproximation of real cadence. Usually it is quite close to reality, but in particular situation it may fail.
If you need a very precise cadence value, I suggest you to use our optional wired cadence sensor or an external wireless cadence sensor (like Garmin).

Regards
